Why is it called “Leadership Team”?

The phrase Leadership Team was selected with great intention. Our founding members and inaugural association leaders wanted to emphasize the collaborative culture of the early group and solidify it as part of our ongoing culture. The founders of HECMA wholeheartedly believed that for the field of Higher Education Case Management to thrive, it would be imperative to continue sharing what we know, what we’ve built, what we’ve tried with one another. Through our collaboration we become stronger practitioners, and thus stronger as a field. To that end a hierarchical label, such as “executive board,” did not fit the vision.

In developing the slate of leadership officer titles, collaboration and breaking from traditional organization structure was again at the forefront of the minds of those who met during the Iowa State Roundtable. Even as we selected email handles back in 2015, a “President” email was foregone to further embrace the leadership model of HECMA, resulting in “Leadership” being selected for the President’s email handle. While many organizations function through a “Robert’s Rules” or related lens, HECMA and its leadership have striven to build consensus and funnel all committee recommendations back through the Leadership Team for final approval and oversight. We seek to lead through our values: Shared Resources, Collaborative Networking, & Advancing Best Practices.
